About Me

Staying Healthy All Year Around

Everyone wants to be healthy. Unfortunately, unless you take active steps to maintain your health, as you get older, it is likely to deteriorate. I discovered this the hard way. For many years, I avoided visiting the doctor and I didn't really pay attention to my diet. As a result, I developed a number of medical conditions. Thankfully, the staff at my local healthcare clinic were able to help me to recover. From the moment I called and booked my first appointment, to the day of my surgery, the doctors and nurses supported me and explained every step of the treatment plan. I hope you like my blog.

Two Reasons Why New Mums May Need To Get Treatment At A Women’s Health Clinic

by Samuel Henderson

Here are a couple of reasons why women sometimes need to go to a women's health clinic after having a baby.

To receive treatment for their weak pelvic floor

One very common issue that many new mothers experience after having a baby is a weakened pelvic floor. Damage to a woman's pelvic floor can lead to her experiencing several other health issues, including lower back pain and bladder problems. If a woman has noticed that she has developed symptoms that indicate that the muscles of her pelvic floor have weakened as a result of going through labour, she may decide to get this issue treated at a women's health clinic.

In this situation, after being assessed by the clinicians at the health clinic and diagnosed with this condition, the woman might be offered physiotherapy to help her. The physiotherapist could teach her a range of movements that would help her to identify and exercise the muscles within her pelvic floor so that she can strengthen these muscles. If a new mum who has this issue begins physiotherapy soon after she has recovered from giving birth, she will be less likely to develop and need treatment for the other problems that a weak pelvic floor can cause. For example, she could potentially avoid causing damage to her lower back (as a strong pelvic floor plays an important role in supporting the lower back) and thus avoid having to get additional treatment to resolve these related health issues.

To receive treatment for their diastasis recti

A second reason why lots of new mums end up visiting women's health clinics is to get treatment for their diastasis recti. This is a condition that results in the abdominal muscles being pulled apart due to the growth of the woman's uterus throughout pregnancy. This muscle separation can cause issues with a woman's posture, as well as back pain, bloating and bladder control problems. It is not a condition that can be resolved with traditional abdominal workouts like planks and sit-ups, and in fact, this issue can be made worse by these exercise routines.

As such, in this situation, new mums will need to get help from the clinicians at a women's health clinic. They will usually be offered physiotherapy, which will involve doing special exercises that will help the separated abdominal muscles to return to their correct positions. However, in instances where women have severe diastasis recti, they might be advised to undergo surgery to correct this issue.
